Exile Honor Valdemar Book 1 eBook Mercedes Lackey

Mercedes Lackey has captured my imagination and interest through so many generations of the Valdemar series. You cannot go wrong with this series. I own every single book in the series - and will keep it that way until there are no other books to purchase. I do wish that the Kindle version (and some of the "standard" versions) included Larry Dixon's art. Amazing Artists!!! The both of them!

The main character is once again Alberich and I can relate to him in sooo many ways! Questioning right from wrong, sentence syntax (I'm trying to learn multiple languages and he is spot on with his frustrations). Big tough guy with a golden heart that he keeps carefully hidden behind a stern demeanor.

Exile Honor Valdemar Book 1 eBook Mercedes Lackey Reviews

Another great tale from Misty Lackey--an exile from another land, vowed to protect a young Queen Selenay, uses his considerable skills in disguise, fighting, and diplomacy to protect her against the young prince who isn't what he seems.
It takes all his efforts--and those of his wondrous Companion--to protect her from those who plot long against Selenay--and against Valdemar itself.
Our first look at a Karsite character! He got to Valdemar in a rather unusual manner. He was a mess when he arrived, and he won't even wear a proper uniform! Then they made him Weapons Master! And oh wow! The new Weapon's Master is Scary!!! He is also not trusted, simply because he IS Karsite! He has a lot to prove!
I thought that this book was one of the best in the Valdemar series. I admit that I am biased; I love all the books that Mercedes Lackey writes about Valdemar(especially the Herald Mage series) and would buy just about anything she produces, but I believe that characterisation is her strength and was a little disappointed to miss some of that richness in a couple of her recent novels. However, in Exile's Honor she has come back to full strength! I thought that the characterisations in this book were as good as anything she has done.
The story expands on a short story that I originally read in HorseFantastic which told how Alberich, then a loyal Captain in the Karse army, was rescued from Karse (and being burned alive), by a Companion who took him to Valdemar. Fans know Alberich from other stories of Queen Selanay's reign but the transformation of an intensely honorable man from being a loyal son of Karse to an equally loyal weaponsmaster in Valdemar without compromising his honor is a wonderful story. It is also a story which, to my mind manages to be upbeat, despite some pretty intense descriptions of battles, without ever becoming sentimental.
The book describes Selanay when she was the heir apparent - thereby shedding light on her character - and explains how she ascended the throne. It also introduces the Grove born Companion, Rolan - so it is a 'must read' for those who want to know all about Valdemar.
I strongly recommend this book. It could, I think be read alone, but I think that readers who are familiar with Valdemar will probably enjoy it even more . Buy it and enjoy!
This is not my first read of this book. Though it WAS my introduction to Valdemar. I bought it on kindle because I occasionally like to read it again. I hope you will find it as enjoyable as I have.
A easy smooth entertainment. I love the goodness, adventure between the main character s. Always a exciting story. Love to get this on Audible but with a good narrator. This is sometimes not the case and that is a real shame.
I have been a huge fan of the whole series of these books. I have most of them on . It seems as though I had missed this book and had skipped to the next one. Finding this book was such a joy ❤️ for me. It filled in so many blanks.
I have read all of Lackey's Valdemar series multiple times. Two summers ago, I read them all in the order they were published and viewed the development of both the Herald/Companion relationship and Valdemar mythos. This past summer, I read them chronologically from the Mage Wars on, which contributed another layer to my perception of what Lackey has created.

After much debate, I have decided that Exile's Valor is her best and my favorite. Often, her stories are told from the point of view of the Herald who is going to be at the center of the angst and tragedy (Vanyel, Talia, Kerowyn, Karal). In those works, we get the insider's perspective. We live Vanyel's tragedy; we experience Talia's torture; we go through Kerowyn's struggles; we come of age with Karal. Those stories focus on the sorrow and angst and tragedy that directly and immediately affects the main character.

But, with the development of Alberich's character, we get the outsider's perspective - not only an outsider in the sense of his being from Karse and outside the Valdermar experience - but also in the sense that he is outside the tragedy of the tale. Oh, he experiences the tragedy, but his perspective is from the outside, not from the person at the true heart of the tragedy. (For that to be the case, we would get far more development and insight into Selenay's character.) In that sense, Exile's Valor is a real leap for Lackey, and she carries it off masterfully.

Additionally, I find the relationship between Alberich and Kantor to be second only to Vanyel and Yfandes. Yet, even saying that, I feel that Alberich's relationship with Kantor is the most adult and the most equal. Kantor, for me, has far more voice and personality than many of the other Companions.

Thus, Exile's Valor is my favorite.
